Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whom no one living can escape (CtC 12).
Our fellow friar of Sacred Heart Province, he died peacefully at the age of 84 of congestive heart failure on Friday, December 19, 2008, at 5:40am in Loretto Home at the Motherhouse of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis in Springfield, Illinois, after over five years of declining health.
Born in Humphrey, Nebraska, on July 2, 1924, of John P. and Margaret (nee Huthmacher) Haiar, Norbert entered the U.S. Army in 1948 and served for four years. Then he entered the Order of Friars Minor in Sacred Heart Province as a tertiary brother on December 14, 1952, and received the name of Allan. Three years later on July 4, 1955 he entered the novitiate of the First Order; a year and a day later he made his first profession. He professed his final vows on July 5, 1959. In the years between his simple vows and solemn vows Allan continued his initial formation while working at St. Joseph Seminary in Teutopolis. Following final vows he served the brotherhood in various capacities and at various friaries throughout the province. Usually his specialty was in the field of maintenance. He was at Our Lady of Angels in Cleveland (Rocky River) for seven years. He worked at Good Counsel Retreat House in Lincoln, Nebraska, for 13 years. Then he was a member of the maintenance staff at Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago for nine years. After a year at St. John the Baptist Friary in Joliet, Allan retired to St. Francis Village in Crowley, Texas, where he lived in one of the cottages but was a vibrant member of both the friar and the Villa communities. He was known as Brother Fix-It because he was willing to help anyone at any time. In an exemplary way he worked with both his hands and his heart.
When his health began to fail significantly in 2003, he came to Our Lady of Angels Friary at Villa West in Sherman, Illinois. When even more care was needed, he was moved to Loretto Home at the Motherhouse of the Hospital Sisters in Springfield, Illinois. Earlier this month he suffered from a serious bout with pneumonia, which was too much for his heart to take.
Allan was known as a congenial fellow but with determined ways. He knew what he wanted, and readily expressed his wishes and intentions. He always was helpful and handy. It is said that he readily exhibited that Nebraska warmth and humor. To meet Allan was to encounter a generous spirit of prayerful demeanor. On the night before he died, as he was struggling to breathe, he said that he felt as though he was caught between life and death. As he lay dying, he wanted to thank all the people who cared for him all these years, especially the members of Sacred Heart Province.
He is survived by: One Brother Francis Haiar (Carol Jo) of Omaha, Nebraska, two sisters: Helen (Haiar) Meyer of Valley, Nebraska and Evelyn (Haiar) Heiman of Davenport, Iowa, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and the Franciscan Family of the Sacred Heart Province
