GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Alfred W. Bill Hurrelbrink III, 59, of Goodyear, Ariz., formerly of Springfield, died at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Hospice of the Valley in Goodyear, Ariz. He was born Dec. 17, 1949, in Springfield, the son of Alfred and Vianna O’Connor Hurrelbrink II. He married Pam Oakey on May 22, 1981.
He was preceded in death by a sister, JoAnn Hurrelbrink in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Pam Hurrelbrink of Goodyear, Ariz.; two daughters, Bridgette (Alex) Ingram of Springfield and Barbara (Brandon) Smith of Surprise, Ariz.; a son, Donnie (Katie) Hurrelbrink of Coon Rapids, Minn.; four grandchildren, Walker, Jillian and Ann Hurrelbrink of Minnesota and Evan Smith of Arizona; his parents, Al “Curley” and Vianna “Nan” Hurrelbrink II of Springfield; a sister, Diane Hurrelbrink of Springfield; a brother, David (Michele) Hurrelbrink of Springfield; several aunts, uncles and cousins; a niece, Stephanie Hurrelbrink of Chicago; and a nephew, Scott Hurrelbrink of Springfield.
Bill was a resident of Springfield for most of his life, retiring in 2003 to Goodyear, Arizona. He was a Firefighter for 28 years before retiring from the Springfield Fire Department. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a former member of Christ the King Church. Bill graduated from Griffin High School and attended Springfield College in Illinois.
He was co-city champion in water diving at GHS, and won many medals and ribbons. He was captain of the swim team at the original Sun N Fun Club. He competed in swimming at the Regional St. Louis Olympics program where he won many medals as well as many medals during his career as a competitive swimmer/diver.
Bill enlisted in the United States Navy in 1968 and served his country aboard the USS Tidewater, receiving an honorable discharge. He started to work for the Springfield Fire Department in September 1973 as a Firefighter. He was promoted to Driver Engineer, Fire Inspector/Captain and to Arson Investigator/Captain, retiring in 2000 as Chief Arson Investigator/Senior Captain. After retiring from the Springfield Fire Department he went to work for the State Fire Marshal. He worked from 2002 to 2003 as a Storage Tank Safety Specialist.
After leaving the State Fire Marshal, he and his family moved to Goodyear, Ariz. One of the most exciting things Bill got to do while in Arizona was to be security at Super Bowl XLII.
Bill loved his family, enjoyed being around animals and liked to meditate. He was always there to help his fellow firefighter as well as those in need. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle. He was always there for everyone.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm, Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Staab Funeral Home in Springfield, Illinois, with a prayer service at 4 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 am, Friday, October 30, 2009 at Christ The King Church in Springfield, Illinois with Reverend John Nolan officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
