Patricia Louise Furry

July 4, 1932 - September 22, 2018

As the sun sinks on the still horizon, so set the life of Patricia Louise (Piper) Furry at 1:06 a.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018, the first hour of the Autumnal Equinox, God’s celestial sign for all who live to prepare for the promise of death and resurrection. Beloved daughter of Marion Luella Jester Piper Bushkill, sister to Barbara Poole (Donald, deceased) and brother William Piper (Ann), her birth family for 16 years before she became the wife of Wilbur “Will” Samuel Furry, her husband of 58 years, Patricia “Patsy” Furry was born on the 4th of July in 1932 in Springfield. Raised during the Depression she was no stranger to hardship, finding strength in God and others to persevere through life’s challenges. She and Will eloped to Quincy on March 15, 1949, but returned to live and work in Springfield and have many adventures together, raising five cherished children: Samuel Lee, Jo Ellen “Jody” Kienzler (Larry), William Joseph (Paula Romanaux), John Michael (Nancy), and Julie Ann Jenkins (Allen). Patsy and Will became members of Jerome United Methodist Church, the spiritual community where they raised their children. To earn extra money, Patsy worked in the health care profession first as an office assistant, later returning to school to become a licensed practical nurse. She worked at the Physicians Group Clinic and for a who’s who of Springfield doctors, including pediatricians, gynecologists, general practitioners, and surgeons before beginning a career as an LPN at Springfield’s Memorial and St. John’s hospitals, nursing her way from the maternity ward to hospice care, retiring from the profession in 1987, never losing her passion for helping others. She always had a kind word for health-care workers who showed kindness and compassion for their patients. The nurse and aid who shed tears at Patsy’s passing will not soon be forgotten. Patsy had many, many friends. They include her spiritual community at Westside Christian Church, her neighbors on Woodmore Street–Marsha, Lucille, Mary and Cheryl–, and her friends and new family at Illinois Presbyterian Home, where she was living at the time of her death. The family thanks all at the Home who made her final months comfortable and worry free. Patsy had many passions, including a rousing game of “Blitz” with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandchildren. She loved flowers and gardens, music, traveling and shopping, and although she loved a good home-cook meal (and prepared thousands), she enjoyed a hamburger from Steak N Shake more than just about anything. She was passionate about her family, and would do—and probably did—anything to help them along their life journeys.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Westside Christian Church, with internment at Roselawn Cemetery immediately afterward. Friends and family are invited to celebrate a wonderful life, full of joy and memories. Memorial gifts may be made to Kumler Neighborhood Ministries, Ronald McDonald House or to the Illinois Presbyterian Home. Patricia Louise Furry is survived by: her sister Barbara (Phoenix, AZ), her brother William (Springfield), and four of her five children: Samuel, Jody, and William (Springfield), and Julie (Bradenton, FL). John passed away in 2011. Her grandchildren include Daphney Dawn Springer and Gretchen Dade of Colorado; Erik Woehrmann and Joel Woehrmann of Pawnee and Springfield; Galen Brothers Furry of Springfield, Joel Aaron Styzens of Chicago, and Hannah Grace Hopkins of Philadelphia; Shawna Robert Beckett of Colorado, Stephanie Furry Samuelson of Benson, and John Michael Furry II of Springfield; Bethany Atkins-Silas of Atlanta, Georgia; Seth Atkins of Archbold, Ohio; Jordan “Joey Phoenix” Jenkins, of Salem, Massachusetts; and Rebekah Grace Noll, of Lynchburg, Virginia. Her great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews are not forgotten, simply too numerous to enumerate here. Patsy loved you all, and may God bless you all.
