Charles Hudson Evans, 94, of Springfield, died at 8:35 am, Friday, September 2, 2016 at his daughter’s home surrounded by his two loving daughters and family in Roswell, GA. He was born on April 11, 1922 in Bristow, OK to Charles and Grace (Bobbitt) Evans. He married Gloria Ippolito on August 11, 1951, and she preceded him in death on May 31, 2014. Also preceding him in death are his parents and son, Craig Evans.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (William “Bill”) Bell of Springfield and Karen (John) White of Roswell, GA; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Dutton of Chicago.

Charles was a United States Army Air Force Veteran during World War II. He retired in 2012 as a United States Federal Magistrate Judge in Springfield. He previously worked as the 1st Assistant to the Attorney General.

Charles was a member of the U.S. Fourth Fighter Group, formerly the Eagle Squadron, which was stationed at the Canadian Royal Air Force Base “Debden” in Saffron Walden, England. He flew P51’s from 1944-1945, flying 80 missions over Europe.

He was also a member of the Ansar Shriners, Illinois State BAR Association, Masonic Lodge, University of Illinois Alumni Association, the Lincoln Douglas American Inns of Court, and various Judicial Organizations. He enjoyed reading, and he supported the University of Illinois sports teams, Chicago Bears and Bulls. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.

Visitation: 4-7 pm, Tuesday September 6, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.

Funeral Service: 9 am, Wednesday September 7, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Home.
