Mary Ann Spearie, 84, of Springfield, died at 1:15 am Friday, June 6, 2014 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. She was born December 10, 1929 in Springfield to Peter and Anna Kunz Wangard. She married Donald Robert Spearie, Sr. April 7, 1951 and he preceded her in death on September 20, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Br. George Wangard, S.J., Charles and Louis Wangard.

Mary Ann was a member of St. Agnes Church. She retired in 1989 as a librarian at Cathedral School after 19 years of service. She enjoyed reading, needlework, playing Bunco, visiting with friends and family and also taking care of her feline companion, Ellie. Mary Ann loved to write letters which culminated in corresponding with Joyce Millward from England who was her pen pal for over seventy years.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Ann (Donald) Frank of Chatham; three sons, Donald Robert (Elaine) Spearie, Jr. and David Michael (Tammy) Spearie, both of Springfield and Steven Edward (Catherine) Spearie of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren, Jason (Kristi) Frank, Eric (Liz) Frank, Beth Ann Frank (companion, Nick Beltz), Jennifer Spearie (Otto Chanyakorn), Amy Spearie and Ryan (fiancée Whitney Beck) Spearie; three great grandchildren, Alexis Frank, Ethan Beltz and Michael Frank.

Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 am Monday, June 9, 2014 at St. Agnes Church with Reverend Robert Jallas officiating.  Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Animal Protective League of Springfield and Sangamon County or the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois Chapter in honor of her late husband.
